PS3 was about to overtake the 360 in worldwide sales Popular
Gavin Mannion   July 29th, 2010  clock image  1:45 pm

Xbox 360 S

According to the latest official sales figures from Sony and Microsoft we can see that the PS3 was about to overtake the 360 in worldwide sales before the release of the new Xbox 360 redesign.

A couple of week back Microsoft announced that it had shipped (sold) 41.7 million Xbox 360’s worldwide and now Sony has come out and stated that their worldwide sales  (shipped) are 38.1… just 3.6 million behind the Xbox 360.

That may sound like a lot but that’s about 50% less than it was at the beginning of the year and they have obviously been making up the shortfall since then.

However the release of the new Xbox 360 is re-energising sales across the globe at the moment and we won’t know until the end of September but I wouldn’t be surprised to see them increase that gap up to over 4 million by then and then after that it’s all going to depend on the Kinect / Move war that is heating up for this holiday season.

That really sucks bull’s testicles (and definitely not the roasted Spanish delicacy)… especially because back in the day I was all “Team Box! You’re the best, Go Xbox.. Go Xbox!” And now I’m all “the Box is so much fail it makes my teeth hurt… why can’t other people realise you’re filled with fail! WHY XBOX WHY?”.

        Sniff… :pouty: :face: :getlost: :pouty:

I, like many other people, only purchased the PS3 Slim because we deemed the old PS3 too expensive. MS may have released a new console but it’s basically the same thing, just redesigned. No price drop means that those who found the 360 too expensive a while ago will still find it too expensive.

I’m guessing about an extra million damage from the X360 slim. GT5 should negate that. Then Halo Reach lighten that (but I don’t think it will cause more hardware sales than GT5). Then Move will help Sony a little. Kinect will help MS more though. End of year I expect the gap to still be around 3.6 million. Holiday season could give MS the favour because of the newness of the slim.

Well if anyone else is as fed up about RROD as me and is only trading in old 360′s and replacing with 360 slims to finally put an end to that torment then it doesnt really matter how much the install base increases because the attach rate and game sales arent going to go up much. The old argument of New Versus existing Xbox owners definitely plays a bigger role in this scenario due to RROD than it did during the PS3 Slim release sales scenario.

I think it is likely that people previously put off by the RROD may now decide to get a 360S – but it would be silly to replace a functioning piece of kit that might break with a newer model that for all intents and purposes the same thing. Were PS3 slim sales significantly bolstered by existing owners concerned about YLOD.

Well then call me silly because as someone who has been through 5 RROD’s im happy to get rid of my old two piece of shit models and replacing them with a slim. I purchased two by the way so i could play on the other while the first was in for repairs. Also with the HDD now being completely different, the console being more heat friendly and having a port for Kinect in the future incase i actaully want it 2 years down the line if it havs something i like on it and its cheaper. It just seems more prudent to ge a slim now. Especially since i plan to blow big bucks when Live finally launches in SA and i fill up that new HDD.

By the way does anyone have any news on the SA Live ETA and how we transfer over our existing user profiles?

They are apparently still working on the transfer process…. and the ETA is still September.

Right now it’s all about releasing this new model locally then Live I guess.

You know what I find really annoying is the fact that I can’t watch the recent episodes of the Guild on the Zune marketplace, because they’re region blocked. At the very least if we’re getting a restricted product, they should drop the price of Live.

Sony stated that all there figures will be of sales only.

The email notification checkbox should be right above this textbox when you are typing?

As for the sales/shipped figure. The problem honestly is what we cannot trust either Microsoft or Sony to be entirely accurate. Just because they are using sold figures doesn’t mean they are using sold to end client. They could (and most companies do) mean sold to retailers or shipped to local distributors.

The best figures we can ever rely on are local sales figures from companies like NPD, ChartTrack or GFK
