It’s Friday, which means that everyone should be happy and excited for a weekend full of relaxation, activities and of course, gaming. In the spirit of our old Flamebait Friday posts and everyones newfound weekend energy, we thought it would be fun to set up a post for people to debate, exchange opinions and make their opinions heard. Our comments threads can sometimes get heated, so we have created a post where anything goes and your comments dictate the pace. To kick things off, I thought I’d start with something nice and cliche – the age old debate of Xbox Live vs PSN. PSN’s free, Xbox Live has parties and private chats, but which one do you think is better and why? Let’s hear it. |

The best online system is one that has no support for voice communication or friends – to play with other people you have to share ridiculously long, impossible to remember friend codes.

PSN for their dedicated servers, and local support. And XBL for in game cross chat.

Mud= Xbox live if you were wondering!

XBox Live of course. Why, you ask? Two words: Uno & Webcam.

You are wrong. iPhone multiplayer gaming is the best. It’s MP gaming on the move!

I think Lanning is the best, No lag, and I get to physically maul people who pwn me!

Definitely PSN!
LIVE is heavily overrated imo and more often than not found myself muting any form of cross game/party chat.
Also, in my limited experience with PSN, there seems to be a better more mature crowd on PSN. And it’s free, which is a plus.

The only thing i hate on PSN is the dreadful huge updates. I got Socom and had to download a huge 700mb update , that cancled it self several times before actaully downloading all the way… just to get on it and see its like a dead MP game to start with

PSN, since cross game chat kills games.
SHoot the fish shoot the fish, huh what fish? O shit you are not playing fish shoot? No 3 of us are playing generic rpg…
They can keep it.

i dont like MS selling us a product and we as customers only attain 50% of its value while the other 50% is lost due to ” i am sorry sir your R500 a year just does not cover the investment in your country for the true xboxlive service – ” good bye ”
Psn rocks , its free . its that simple . Although i will admit that we need some servers , please. -

PSN (Even though I dont have a PS3) – cause it wont block content banned in germany.

1:51 pm
I’m gonna go for PSN.
Live is great except for the costs and regionally blocked content but PSN gets my vote because I’ve never had an issue with finding games. World at War and Gears of War 2 come to mind.
I’ve had world at war for both systems most recent for 360 and I can’t buy maps or play online, with PSN I can now buy the maps (although I traded in my PS3 copy months ago) and never had an issue with finding a game.
Oh yea and stuff on PSN seems to be cheaper.
Ooh and less 10 year olds.

I think there are kiddies on both networks – only this week i had these 2 champs in a MAG game with eminem buzzing in the background and letting everyone else in the team participating on a 30min debate on how much a*s they are going to f8ck…

PSN, game sharing with up to 5 people with some titles which is a huge bonus and most of them normally has in game chat so nothing to complain about.

I believe PSN appears to have a more mature crowd is because fewer people have mics, and annoying kids are less likely to go out and buy a mic. I prefer Xbox live simply because I can get downloadabe content without leaving the game. The integration is much better, and $50 a year isn’t that much. But the PSN is fine too. I like that content on the PSN is bought with money and not points.

I’ve mentioned this a million times before, but I still don’t get how trophies work. It boggles my mind
March 5, 2010

Trophies rock!
I think it’s better being able to see how many Platinum trophies someone has than a Gamerscore.
It shows true dedication to a specific game and not games in general.

I have noticed that PS3 stuff is Higher grade compared to Xbox stuff… explains a lot and it keeps the rabble away.
March 5, 2010
3:39 pm
Which is why I have a sum total of /0/ platinum trophies.
Too many games, not nearly enough time.

I have a question about dedicated servers. They all sit overseas right? Wouldn’t that create lag for the SA players? I remember Left 4 Dead on xbox live using dedicated servers which was actualy a problem since we experienced tons of lag compared to local peer to peer games, there was a glitch to get past the dedicated servers which saved us. I also played Killzone 2 a couple of times and the lag is much worse than local Modern Warefare 2 games. Please explain the lure of dedicated servers for SA players.

While I 100% agree about the annoying region locking on Xbox Live you also have to remember that the World at war map packs never appeared to even land on the PSN in South Africa and many other countries.
But then again the ability to share PSN titles and connect the PSP to it does also give it the upper hand.
I have used cross game chat many times while waiting to get into a full game so while it’s not a deal breaker it is pretty cool and the web integration of Live is pretty well thought out.

On a side note for weekend shoppers, the Xbox 360 Arcade Bundle is R1999 @Game this weekend. Also Borderlands is now R399 at Incredible

Any one who believes that psn is better or anywhere near as good as xbl must be very poorly informed, completely biased or extremely dumb. I have just logged onto PSN for the first time in a couple of years expecting a ok experience but not as good as xbl. I am shocked by how poor it is, free or not free. No wonder it is free becuase who in there right mind would pay for that crap. And sony are abou to start charging LOL!
Ppl say explain why XBL is better, it is simply the sum of all parts, not just a healine feature. The best way I can explain is imagine if facebook had the old dis type black screen with green writing but you could still do the same things. It wouldnt be any where as popular as it is. XBL is so easy and fun to be using. PSN feels like it was made in the 90′s. Everything is os hard to find. You can’t even sort all downloads by demos. You cant even delete your pending downloads. The main thing for me is the interface, like i said it is 10 years behing the funcionality of xbl.
It is well documented by all professional journalists that xbl is streets ahead, only ps3 fanboys seem to be blinded.

You got lag on Killzone 2? Remember Killzone 2 has a server selector .. It asks you to either connect to a US server or a EU server. Maybe you were on a UK server connecting to a US game. That might make the lag horrible, but i dont have a huge Lag gap, Like what i had like when playing Gears2 Or L4D, because whoever told you L4D has dedicated servers lied. Xbox Live = 90% P2P servers. Even on NFS shift my cars dont teleport all over the show when playing it on PSN compared to Live

Well thats just the price of the acade that still doesnt give it justice.. R2000 for an Arcade and R3000 for a Elite/Pro 120GB. But buyt eh HDD alone and thats R1200+ extra. HA spare me my internal 2.5inch 320GB is bigger that , and cost me like R500
March 8, 2010
7:37 am
Are you sure about that. I can cancel my pending downloads explain that? press triangle on the file and say cancel?
Plus why Pay for a service that doesnt give US P2P server connections. Even with Forza 2 that the cars kept on teleporting Like Goku fighting Cell but on NFS on PSN it doesnt?

trophies are easy really. bronze = equal the easy stuff or story driven stuff. Silver is the more difficult stuff. And Gold is like run throughs’ or completing the game on a hard difficulty. Platinum … well lets say that’s the picture on you get on your game lsit when you complete the game

10:11 pm
Yes your right you can actually, it is still s**t though! No comparison, face it, ps3 has blu ray xbox has XBL. That is their advantages.
I own both systems and maintain that ps3 is shocking online compared to xbox.

10:17 pm
Also lets face it, does anyhting good come for free???
XBL is a high quality service and alot of the money ppl pay is invested into improving it.
Thats is why PSN is shoddy, lack of investment.
I (and the millions of happy XBL customers) am willing to pay for something that is worth it.
Sure you can have a free servive in PSN (they are about to start charging) but this is the 2010′s not the 1990′s. PSN is years behind the benchmark which is XBL. The quality distinction is well documented, just do your research.

True true, I own both systems too. And i got tired of always hoping to get host while playing with mates. There’s nothing more frustrating hearing all your mates screaming at the opponents because of that 2 second time difference… Kinda kills the whole online experience

The only thing id say PSN is behind in is, store content, party and game invites. The rest is up to par.
Just wish they’ll make that freaking browser faster.. its like being on a 56K when searching something
